Introduction

????????? This is a workbook, a training manual for those tired of being victims when it becomes ?Show Time!? on the street. These 340 maneuvers have been tested on countless battlefields by professional warriors for hundreds of years. The objective of these techniques is to win, quickly and efficiently.

????????? This manual is meant to be scribbled in, revised, and notated as you dig into this unique, inspiring material. These techniques present combinations of throws, locks, breaks, holds, chops, kicks, punches and other strikes arranged in 11 levels of belt ranks, as presently used in the Zen Tao Kempo system. The first four levels (White, Blue, 2nd Degree Green, 1st Degree Green) concentrate on dealing with how to get yourself out of holds and locks, and leave the assailant down-and-out in the process. Although some time is spent on defending against fist and leg attacks, not until the following two levels (3rd Brown and 2nd Brown) will you focus entirely on such problems.

????????? The seventh and eighth belt levels (1st Brown and 1st Degree Black) then concentrate almost exclusively on resolving multiple opponent and weapon attacks. And finally, the defense curriculum of the last three belts (2nd through 4th Black) requires you to elicit longer and more complex responses, drawing on the incremented training of the previous levels.

????????? Obviously this is no crash course. Don?t kid yourself. You didn?t really believe you could put in a few spare hours and still walk the streets with confidence, did you? If so, you?d be better off buying a gun and hoping for the best. Even so, a gun won?t increase your sensitivity to your surroundings to potential attacks, or make you stronger and more agile with better reflexes. How much time investment is your life worth?

????????? These techniques insist on development of the capacity for fluid adaptation according to circumstace, practitioner, and opponent. There has been a deliberate attempt in the Manual?s layout to allow room for you to leave tracks as you modify these suggestions for resolving ?git-down? conflict in your favor.

????????? The idea here is to place the onus of responsibility directly on the practitioner--where it belongs. Adaptability and resourcefulness are sought, not robotic responses. To encourage this core of adaptability, I have used such terms as ?leading hand,? ?oblique angle,? ?closer knee,? and even ?the more convenient hand? to force you to research what can work at any given moment.

????????? In setting up the combat situation for your research, the letters? ?OA? refer to ?Offensive Attack,? while ?DR? details your ?Defensive Response? or counter-attack.

????????? The word ?same? in a technique description is used in two contexts. It may refer to the extremity or limb last mentioned in a previous stage of the maneuver. For example:

???????????????????????????? ?Rear elbow delivers lateral smash to his temple.

???????????????????????????? Same hand reverse chops his throat.?

????????? Or ?same? can refer to how you and your attacker face-off, as in the following example:

?You both have the same foot forward?

means that you both have your right feet as the leading edge in your stances.

Conversely, ?Your stance mirrors his stance? merely says that your right foot and his left foot (or vice-versa) are forward, as in a mirror image.

In the practice arena or on the street, two maxims for effective self-defense hold true:

1. It?s better to respond before the attack takes place, or at least as soon as it?s initiated, and not ?after the fact? of the enemy?s advantage.

2. Options exist at any stage in responding to an attack.

????????? You will notice the rather quaint, antiquated titles attached to many of the maneuvers. What?s in a name? Well, in this case, the names will enable you to distinguish and memorize the techniques easier. The names themselves are holdovers from a time when men (and even a few women) depended on hand-to-hand combat skills to save their hides. The nomenclature reflects their heritage from Shaolin Ch?uan Fa, AKA Chinese Kempo.

?????????????????????????????????????

????????? Some say that the origin of Kempo is India, and that the art was adapted by Tibet, China, Okinawa, and Japan. But who can say with certainty what happened in the remote or pre-historical past? Most of the evidence is from secondary or third-hand sources at best, and from anecdotes or tall tales at worst.

????????? We should own up to the fact that no primary, participatory, objective accounts exist regarding the well-spring locations and exact early methods of fighting systems. Certainly many claims have been made, but people being the insecure animals they are, the claims end to be self-serving and bear only faint resemblance to what has happened?especially in remote centuries.

????????? The confusion is further heightened by egocentrism. To make the claim of one man being the progenitor of a fighting art is the same as saying one person invented a language: No serious student of history can ignore cultural influences upon the individual.

????????? Contrary to popular belief, neither Kempo nor the boxing genre known as Shaolin began in the Buddhist Shaolin Temple in Henan Province in northern China. And Da Mo (Bodhidharma) was not the founding father of either system. The truth is that Chinese boxing has been evolving systematically, cogently for 4,000 years or more. We?re looking at a continuous process here. To segment a time period without recognizing the influences and contributions of previous centuries is not a trait of matured judgment.

~

????????? There exists historical trace of systematic exercise in China dating back to 2205 BC. This system, made popular by Emperor Yu of Chin Kingdom, was righteously focused on improving the health of his subjects. Though no sign of a fighting system (in written form) has survived from those early times, we can make a reasonable deduction by considering this logical proposition: Having ample leisure to develop and implement exercise therapies suggests that defensive systems of hand-to-hand combat were already being practiced.

????????? Apparently the first written evidence treating martial arts in China was set forth circa 200 AD by the Yellow Turbans, a sect that helped bring the Han Dynasty to an end. Officially, they fought unarmed because no commoners were allowed to carry weapons at this time. Nonetheless, in the Yellow Turbans? treatise called Han Shu I Wen Chih or Handbook of the Arts, 200 pages were devoted to defensive and offensive strategies using skilled hand, foot, and weaponry techniques.

????????? By the time Da Mo arrived at Shaolin Temple in the Fifth Century AD, unarmed combatives were systematized and probably being practiced throughout much of the Kingdom?except, for the moment, in the Temple. What this patriarch of Chan/Zen Buddhism definitely contributed was a series of health-improvement and internal energy-generating exercises for the resident monks. No extant material exists showing any martial technique that Da Mo might have imparted.

????????? However, Da Mo?s system did add a depth of new understanding regarding intrinsic human energy, as his vigorous psycho-physical exercises were later wedded to the traditional combative skills known as shaolin shu (?temple boxing?) and ch?uan fa ?(?fist methods?). The pronunciation of the Chinese ideographs for ch?uan fa are rendered ?kempo? in Okinawa and Japan.

~

????????? At this point we can suggest a tentative, theoretical construct based on our observations. For example, we can see that few of Kempo?s moves resemble the Long Fist (Chang Ch?uan) styles characteristic of China?s provinces of the Han north or Muslim east. And conversely, many of the movements have much in common with several southern styles of pugilism, e.g. White Eyebrow and White Tiger (both infamous as underground ?tong? styles). We may therefore deduce that Kempo is a remote ancestor of southern Ch?uan Fa, brought from south China to the southern islands within the ancient Japanese empire.

We can now pick up a trail of hard evidence in a Zen temple in the southern Japanese island prefecture of Kyushu. In the late 1920?s Dr. James Mitose, a Rinzai priest, brought Kosho Shorei Kempo-jitsu with him when he moved back to Hawaii. There are claims for his being the 21st descendant of that style, as handed down (say the founders of the U.S. Sei Kosho Shorei Shinbun) by a Japanese folk-hero, Bosatsu, in the 1600?s. They also claim that Bosatsu was the creator of Kempo, but there is no hard evidence to support this.

~

????????? Unfortunately, there is a heck of a lot of nonsense circulating among martial arts practitioners?not only about the arts? origins and heroes, but also regarding the modern socio-political dynamics of these arts and their living proponents. It is in Kempo?s favor that it has seen a multitude of separate systems and sub-systems (e.g. Kara-ho Kempo, HhhoAmerican Kenpo, Shaolin Kempo, Zen Tao Kempo, etc.) flower from the efforts of Dr. James Mitose. However, lest someone venerate the man unjustly, we should recognize that not only was he a Rinzai minister and man of learning, he was a convicted killer who died serving his sentence in a California penitentiary.

???????????

??????????? A great lack of information and downright suppression of truth exists regarding he occurrence and development of modern Asian martial arts in the U.S. and around the world. Chinese stylists should recognize the fact that the Shaolin temples in several provinces have nurtured not only some wonderful arts, but some horribly negative social influences as well. The suppression of rights in the Qing Dynasty led to the underground development of many schools. Many of these became secret ?tong? organizations, which later formed the backbone of the world?s largest crime organization. There are many ties between ?kung-fu? and dope-dealers, prostitution rings, gambling syndicates, arms smuggling, etc.

????????? Korean stylists probably also know that traditional Korean martial arts is a required study for Korean military men. Do they also know that the Korean CIA has set up many dojang in the U.S. as a front for illegal intelligence gathering? One needs to question the proliferation of the elite arts by high-ranking Korean military personnel in major U.S. cities.

????????? And students of traditional Japanese disciplines should also research the implications of blind emulation and adulation of the culture they advance. All things Japanese are not wonderful: racism, nationalistic militarism, a thriving sex-slave market (which has included thousands of victimized American, Filipino, and east Asian women), drug-trafficking, strong-arm protection rackets, and intimate ties between Japanese government-corporations-Yakuza are all well documented. Anyone not understanding the links between traditional Japanese martial arts and the Yakuza, and the impact of the wedding of these ancient ethics on modern Japanese life, needs to go to the library and dig.

~

??????????? Hey, if you don?t like the news, go make your own?which brings me to the crux of this introductory statement: Our national tendency towards faddism, exotica, and whatever?s new, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of us blindly following Asian customs, dress, manners in our lives and studies. Asians have developed their arts with the same tools as we have. Are we so insecure culturally that we cannot accept seminal information, and develop our own material? That, after all, is what the East has been doing for millennia?
