ABOUT THIS TRAINING MANUAL

The Chan Hou Ch’uan Fa/Zen Kempo Monkey Fist form occupies a uniquely pivotal position in the Zen Tao Kempo training program. It is at this point in his development that the advanced student prepares in earnest his tools of inner alchemy.

Previously the candidate has already been introduced to several external strength-building and internal ki/chi-generating studies. But it is here that his concerns and efforts decisively fold inward: Physical conditioning is an integral part of his life, mental training is on-going, and concern for certain aspects of spiritual life-force now assume supreme importance.

As the transitional link between external and internal studies, Chan Hou Ch’uan Fa requires no physical prowess not already achieved. In fact, much like T’ai-chi Ch’uan and Shing-Yi Ch’uan, the form appears deceptively easy to perform. And that is how it should be: the greater body of work is being done on the inside. If you’re looking for the usual "monkey" acrobatics, you won’t find them here. The spirit of the monkey is evident, however—an easy agility, flexibility, softness.

What does this form ask of the performer, then? Nothing any complete martial artist shouldn’t have under his belt: 1) Intimate knowledge of striking zones, including exact acupuncture point targets; and 2) An ability to wed knowledge of meridian energy flow with controlled intent to project ki/chi out limbs.
